Patrick McCarthy just emailed a photo of a new, to me, Kenda painting. It's obviously a rendering of a Madonna and Child. It's in a style I've not seen before, whether in Karl's studio, his home or photographs. Unless I find out otherwise, I'm guessing it was an early work, perhaps in the mid-sixties.

Possibly the End of my Kenda Photographs

I have had great hopes, in recent years, of being able to photograph many of the Kenda paintings, from various periods, that are in private hands, perhaps hundreds still in the possession of Karl's widow, Ann. I now no longer believe that is going to be possible. Ann is seldom down here in Ft. Lauderdale and has moved on with her life and is more oriented to the Now and with little regard for the past. I cannot fault her for that, but I believe the window for photographing the Kenda paintings still in her possession has closed. I fear for their ultimate fates when Ann no longer has use for them or otherwise disposes of the many she still owns. I may still be able to post paintings from others' collections, but I'm dependent upon them spotting my write-ups on Karl and their contacting me with photos of their own Kendas. I would still like to fill in more of Karl's biography should any of his old friends spot this blog or the Facebook page I created for Karl's works. I know some of these posts show up on Google searches, so maybe...

The Last of my Kendas

I've finally gotten around to photographing the last of my Kenda  paintings.  It is the smallest of a set of three - all different sizes - depictions of horses on a carousel.  As are most, if not all, of Karl's smaller paintings, it is acrylic on canvas.

It is most definitely one of his earliest efforts.  I have written on the back "1963-4", which must have been told to me by his widow, Ann.  I hadn't even met Karl for another five or six years.

It's obvious to me that he was still working on what I consider to be his later, signature style, during his Cosmic or Psychedelic Period, as I have termed that stage of his development as an artist.

Old Friend of Karl's Found

Patrick McCarthy was, he believes, thirteen when he visited Karl's studio on NE 79th Street in Miami with his father.  Karl gave him a painting, shown below, which he still has, among others.  He was even Karl's Best Man at his wedding to Ann.  I hope he can supply us with photos of more of Karl's works and I still hope to visit Ann when she's in Ft. Lauderdale to photograph some of the many works still in her possession.

I forgot that Patrick sent me one photo, so far, of another of his Kenda paintings.  The one below is entitled "Dans Macabre" and is dated July 1960:

A lady sent me this photo of a Karl Kenda painting she owns.  It appears to be one of his small works placed within a frame which was then placed within a larger frame.  The painting itself was likely not framed when bought.
Upon enlarging this photo, I can barely read Karl's signature, but it appears to be genuine; no reason to suspect that Karl's works have ever been copied.  The woman asked if I'd like to buy it - and I would - but I don't have the discretionary funds I once had.  I.e., I can't afford to buy it at the moment.
